GISH student wins carpentry contest

Grand Island Senior High sophomore Brandon Gawrych found out that he liked carpentry when he was just 10 years old and his family moved into a home with an unfinished basement.

Gawrych said that gave him an opportunity to help his dad, Chad, who works at Case IH, and his grandfather, Don Schritt, who is an estimator at G.I. Body Shop, finish off the basement.

"I was probably in the fourth or fifth grade," Gawrych said.

He got another chance to work at carpentry when he was a seventh-grader at Walnut Middle School and he participated in an after-school construction club that built a small shed. Once again, Gawrych enjoyed the experience.

But it was going to the Nebraska USA Skills Competition in Hastings that proved to Gawrych that he not only had an interest in carpentry, but that he also had a lot of ability in that area. That ability was demonstrated when Gawrych, competing against students from all over the state including juniors and seniors, won first place in the carpentry competition.

Gawrych said that students were given from 8 a.m. to 2;30 p.m. to build a floor, wall, stair stringers and rafters as part of a single unit. He said students were judged on how good the project looked when it was completed, how fast they were able to complete the project and whether he followed safety procedures to keep himself safe while working on the project.  Full Story
