GISH soccer team honored

The 2011 Grand Island Senior High state runner-up soccer team may be better remembered for its achievements off the field than on the field.

That is saying quite a lot when a team has an undefeated regular season, beats traditional soccer powerhouse Lincoln East three times in a single season, has stormed back from a 3-0 half-time deficit to beat Kearney 4-3 and then has come within a hair's breadth of winning the Nebraska State Class A soccer championship before losing to another traditional soccer powerhouse, Creighton Prep, by the slimmest of margins, 2-1.

But as head coach Jeremy Jensen told an audience of parents, family members and team supporters during Sunday afternoon's celebration at the Grand Island Senior High West Gym hosted by the Nebraska Latino American Commission, his two most vivid memories of the 2011 team 10 years from now will come from the very beginning of the season and the very end.  Full Story
