GRAND ISLAND —
The perfect follow-up to Thanksgiving turkey and stuffing was hitting the hardwood in Grand Island.
In fact, 33 teams, including teams from David City, Geneva/Fillmore,
Minden, Aurora, Wood River, Kearney, Hastings and Doniphan,
participated in the GI Lightning Tip-Off Classic at Grand Island Senior
High.
The David City team had a thrilling finish as eighth-grader Austin
Havlena took an overtime shot to win the game 33-32 over the Grand
Island Northwest Nuggets.
Austin's sister, Ashley, was ecstatic about having a holiday tournament in which she could watch her brother play.
"I don't know that I'd get to see him play during regular games," said Ashley, who attends the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The tournament was organized by GI Lightning owner and Director Montie
Fyfe primary as a way to give the 160 boys and girls in his 19 GI
Lightning Grand Island basketball teams, led by 35 coaches, a venue to
play new teams.
