GISH brings new life to 'West Side Story'

GRAND ISLAND —
To hear the lead actors and co-directors of "West Side Story" tell it, "Gee, Officer Krupke" is the number to watch.

While the entire show is full of great acting and familiar songs, it's the musical number involving the Jets, the Sharks and a local police officer -- played in Grand Island Senior High School's production by Principal Kent Mann -- that is particularly memorable.

Co-directors Adam Lambert and Greg Ulmer and seniors Caitlynn Schwehn and Schuyler Arnold, who play Maria and Tony respectively, all pointed to the comedic song as a favorite, particularly because of Ben McGahan's performance.

"It's funny," Lambert said. "He's (McGahan) just funny. The song involves the whole Jets gang, but your eye is just drawn to him."

Schwehn and Arnold agree.
