GRAND ISLAND —
The
Grand Island Senior High marching band had a lot to look forward to
about this week's trip to perform at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville,
Fla.
Seventy-degree weather. A trip to Universal Studios. Great seats to watch the Nebraska football team play a New Year's Day game.
But first, there was one obstacle that was drawing a hefty share of trepidation: The 30-hour bus ride to get there.
"That's going to try my endurance, for sure," said Greg Sanchez, a band parent and chaperone for the trip.
The 120 students and 20 parents going on the trip buzzed with
excitement as they boarded their buses and left Sunday morning. It was
doubtful, though, that the energy would remain until the band members
stepped off the buses Monday afternoon in Florida.
Senior trombone player John Steinke and his friends had devised a plan:
They had gone short on sleep the last couple of nights so they could
sleep on the bus (One even wore pajama pants while loading).
