The names of the four to five people whom the Grand Island school board wants to bring in as candidates to be the next superintendent for the school board should be revealed on Nov. 22.

Randy Nelson of the consulting firm McPherson & Jacobson told the Grand Island school board Monday evening that the original pool of 12 candidates interested in the superintendent's job last May shrank to about eight people.

However, many people from last spring have kept their names in the candidate pool, with a number of other people also adding their names to the list of applicants, Nelson said. The list of potential applicants is now up to about 14 to 15 people.

He said Grand Island lost a few candidates because some of them were hired to be superintendent for other districts. He said a few other people withdrew their names when the board decided to not make a hiring decision last May and have an interim superintendent for the 2010-11 school year.

Nelson said those people may have believed that the Grand Island board did not believe they were a good match for the Grand Island district because it was unwilling to make an immediate hiring decision.  Full Story
