GIPS bus routes serving more students this year

Grand Island public schools' enrollment is not the only thing on the rise with the opening of the 2009-10 school year: So is ridership on the school district's bus system.

Ridership is up most dramatically on the district's elementary route, which takes students to Shoemaker, Gates and Starr elementary schools.

"We have 70 students on the elementary route," said Mick Brown of First Holiday Tour and Travel, which operates the bus system for the Grand Island public schools.

At the end of the 2008-09 school year, the elementary route was carrying 40 students, Brown said.  Full Story
