The Grand Island school board will be asked on Thursday night to approve a contract with the Nebraska School Public Relations Association to conduct a communication audit for the school district.

Rob Winter, in his first year as Grand Island’s school superintendent, raised the possibility during the board’s November meeting of hiring a firm to conduct a communication audit.

In its proposal to the school district, the NSPRA noted most taxpayers typically do not have children in school.

The NSPRA said that means it is important for the district to develop two-way communication with district patrons that keeps them informed, that demonstrates the school district is exhibiting fiscal and educational accountability, and that helps build support for the schools.

The NSPRA said the audit will help the district assess the effectiveness of its communication strategies, identifying strengths, weaknesses and communication gaps. The audit will recommend cost-effective ways for the district to achieve its goals. It will identify patrons’ perceptions about the Grand Island school district and its individual schools. It also will specifically look at parent, community and staff issues and concerns.  Full Story
