GIPS seeks to implement career pathways in CTE program

The next goal for the proposed career and technical education (CTE) program in Grand Island is to have curriculums developed for two career pathway programs in the former Pentair plant, beginning with the 2012-13 school year.

GIPS Associate Superintendent Robin Dexter told the Grand Island school board Thursday evening that is an ambitious goal, but one that supporters of an enhanced career and technical education program hope to achieve.

Dexter said one challenge will be to decide the first two pathway curricula to be created. However, because of the strong support of the Grand Island business community, one obvious candidate is to have a pathway in the manufacturing area.

A group of about 40 people worked this past year as part of a design team for the learning plan that will guide the new CTE program.

While the former Pentair building will house some of the new career pathway programs, that building will not be the only location for the CTE program, Dexter said. Decisions must be made about what programs are taught at the former Pentair building on Adams Street, what programs may be kept at Senior High, but made better, and what programs might be taught at other locations, Dexter said.  Full Story
