Two Knickrehm Elementary School students have been honored as part of Nebraska's celebration of National Ag Week.

Gov. Dave Heineman and Greg Ibach, director of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, announced the winners of the 2010 Nebraska Department of Agriculture Poster Contest Friday.

In the first- and second-grade division, the Governor's Choice Award went to Brody Arrants from Knickrehm. Taking third place in the fifth- and sixth-grade division was Sandy Barrera from Knickrehm.

In announcing the poster contest winners, Heineman said this is the seventh year of the contest. This year, there were 1,341 entries from first- through sixth-grade students from across Nebraska. The theme was: "Nebraska Agriculture: Thank a Farmer."

"Knowing where our food comes from and what it takes to succeed in agriculture are important lessons," Heineman said. "In Nebraska, agriculture is our largest and most diverse industry."

Today, the first day of spring, is National Agricultural Day.

Earlier in the week, Heineman visited farms in three locations across the state, including the Kearney area, as part of the week's recognition of the agricultural industry.

"The agricultural industry is critical to our small communities in rural Nebraska," he said.  Full Story
