G.I. schools hit federal benchmarks; Northwest misses three

The Grand Island Public Schools met all 459 federal benchmarks that mark adequate yearly progress or AYP under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, according to the Nebraska State Report Card released Monday.

Northwest Public Schools, meanwhile, missed three of 125 federal AYP benchmarks, according to Jane Brown, curriculum coordinator for the Northwest Public Schools.

Northwest missed reading and math benchmarks for special education students in eighth-grade and it also missed for kids living in poverty (free and reduced lunch) on math at Cedar Hollow.

This is the second straight year that the Northwest Public Schools has missed in those categories, which means it has been put on the "needs improvement" list for the current school year when it comes to academic achievement for eighth-grade special education students in reading and math, Brown said.  Full Story
