The Grand Island school board on Thursday night renewed a contract with Hall County for the services of a deputy county attorney to continue to conduct truancy hearings for students who are chronically late or absent from school.

Deputy County Attorney Marty Klein has conducted the truancy hearings, which bring together the student, the student’s parents or guardians, school social workers and often other school staff to develop plans to improve school attendance.

Truancy can become a prosecutable offense, but school officials believe that Klein’s presence at the very beginning of the process helps both the student and parents immediately realize the seriousness of chronic school absenteeism. As a result, school officials believe the informal truancy court can often help keep students and parents out of official court proceedings.  Full Story
