The Grand Island school board Thursday night gave the green light to getting documents ready to go out for bids for synthetic turf for the football field at Memorial Stadium.

Activities Director Joe Kutlas told the board that not only the football team would use the field, but also band, soccer, Junior ROTC, PE classes, dance team and color guard, plus the baseball and softball team practice on wet days. Central Catholic football could play all its home games on the new field.

Kutlas said the new field would provide a superior surface for Harvest of Harmony field competition. With the looming loss of soccer fields at Fonner Park, having a new soccer surface in town would be good, he said.

Total estimated costs are $950,000. Kutlas said $105,000 would come from a Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality grant to recycle used tires, $105,000 from the Booster Club and $225,000 from nine private donors.  Full Story
