GRAND ISLAND —
The Grand Island school board has unanimously approved the 2008-09 budget, OKing a spending plan that has a small decrease in the overall tax levy.

In other action, the board opted for a "small wind" project, even though the decision means falling short of the goal of getting 25 percent of district energy from renewable sources.

For the 2008-09 budget, the total levy will be $1.197, compared to a little more than $1.21 last year. District business manager Virgil Harden said the levy will drop by $0.125 cents.

As a result, the owner of a $100,000 home whose price did not appreciate in the past year would see a property tax decrease of $12.48 for the coming year.  Full Story
