At a meeting where the Grand Island school board was forced to consider painful cuts, board members also gave approval to two major building projects, including one that will provide more space for Howard Elementary students.
The board approved a bid from Tri Valley Builders to construct an annex at Howard Elementary at a cost of $701,000. It also approved an alternate to the base bid in which Grand Island school employees will do some of the work, bringing the total price down to $692,400.
The board also approved a bid of $238,433 from Tri-Cities Group to reroof the section of the Kneale Administration Building that is over the warehouse storage area.
Dan Petsch, building and grounds supervisor, said the roof had become the No. 1 priority for roof repair in the district, with water now leaking through and also starting to do some damage to exterior walls.
Petsch took pains to point out that the funding for both projects will come from the district’s special building fund, a fund that is restricted for use on building projects and repairs. Money from that fund cannot be used to pay for personnel costs or for programs.
He also noted that the district plans to convert its 5-cent building fund levy to use it to support the district’s general fund, for which the levy is already at $1 per $100 of building value. He said that conversion will restrict the district’s ability to complete future building projects.
