After a short board meeting to modify the current year’s budget, the Grand Island school board adjourned to a budget work session to review the contingent decisions made so far and make a few last-minute adjustments prior to its regular May meeting next week.

The budget amendments approved during the regular meeting were technical, with a change to reflect that the district refinanced bonds for the installation of Field Turf at Memorial Stadium and to reflect the fact that the district accepted federal stimulus funds, known as the Education Jobs Fund, that had not been included in the original budget.

The change added $2.55 million to the district’s general fund this budget year, but did not change the amount of property taxes collected nor the property tax levy.

Following the regular meeting, the board had a work session to review the consensus budget decisions. A total of just over $1.3 million in budget reductions were made to district spending plans for the 2011-12 fiscal year — nearly $584,000 in budget reductions were approved at the elementary level, about $704,000 at the middle school level and nearly $685,000 at the high school level.

Board members proposed a couple tweaks to the line items. One proposed tweak at the middle school level was adding a 0.4 family and consumer science teacher at Barr Middle School and adding one hall monitor back at G.I. Senior High. One proposal had eliminated both hall monitors at Senior High.  Full Story
