GRAND ISLAND —
The vast majority of fourth-, eighth- and 11th-grade students in the Grand Island and Northwest school systems are showing proficiency in reading, math and science.
Those results were released Friday as part of the annual State of the Schools report issued by the Nebraska Department of Education for all public schools in Nebraska.
Writing results were released earlier this year.
Jane Brown, curriculum coordinator for the Northwest Public Schools, said the results show that, as a district, "we're making progress in some areas, while work needs to be done in others."
She noted that the State of the Schools report is not an end in itself. Both teachers and students are expected to use the assessment results to make improvement in the future.
Deb Harder, a director for teaching and learning in the Grand Island Public Schools, was generally pleased with Grand Island's results, noting it was generally slightly above, at or slightly below state averages in the various curriculum areas.
