Four-classroom modular proposed for Howard Elementary

The Grand Island school board will be asked in December to approve requesting bids for a four-classroom modular building to help relieve crowding at Howard Elementary.

The issue was discussed at a school board meeting Monday night.

Howard had a 30-student increase in enrollment this year, but Virgil Harden, business manager for the Grand Island Public Schools, said an even bigger reason for proposing a modular addition is that the building already has been forced to convert the custodial closets and other spaces into classrooms.

Even with the addition, Howard’s music room will be converted to a classroom for the 2011-12 school year, with the music teacher traveling from classroom to classroom to teach vocal music.

Howard is the first K-5 school in Grand Island scheduled to have its students and teachers go on a continuous calendar. The school year will have the same number of student days, but the calendar has a shorter summer break, complemented by additional short breaks during the school year.  Full Story
