Former Starr students to graduate together as high achievers

Three days until the end of school - "No, two days, we're not counting today!" said Jennifer Schneider - and five former Starr Elementary students who are now seniors have gathered to talk about their time together in the Grand Island Public Schools.

In addition to Schneider, other members of the group who met Friday in Senior High's media center included Kari Mettenbrink, Sarah Bauer, Callie Sheen and Jayk Betson.

Mettenbrink, Sheen and Schneider started out as kindergartners at Starr, while Bauer and Betson joined the class as first-graders the following year.



As the days dwindle in the school year, there certainly will be many other seniors who started out as kindergartners or first-graders at one of Grand Island's many elementary schools and are now finishing their school careers together.

But what makes these five students a little bit unusual is that they come from a relatively small pool of Starr students 13 years ago - just 47 kids when they were kindergartners - and yet they have some of the highest academic achievements in a graduating class of hundreds of students.  Full Story
