A short ceremony to recognize Walnut Middle School sixth-grader Mariola Sanchez as the national winner of the poster contest sponsored by The National Poison Prevention Week Council became one of those teachable moments for Sanchez's classmates.

Joan McVoy, public education specialist for the Nebraska Regional Poison Control Center in Omaha, came to Walnut Middle School to recognize Sanchez for her accomplishment.

McVoy, who also is a registered nurse, said the judging committee at the Nebraska Regional Poison Control Center always looks forward to getting the entries from Diane Meyer's fifth-graders each year because they produce so many good posters.  Full Story
