The unofficial first-day count for the Grand Island Public Schools edged just past 9,000, with a preliminary tally of 9,001 students.
Assistant Superintendent Robin Dexter said that includes 415 preschool students, 4,454 students in grades K-5; a total of 1,949 students in grades 6-8; and 2,183 students at Grand Island Senior High. Last year, Grand Island Public Schools had a first-day enrollment of 8,948 students, which means this year's first-day enrollment is up by 53 students.
All grade levels are up except preschool, where registration is down by 17 students.
