Fifth-graders who want to learn how to play a band instrument will have the opportunity to do so through a program being offered through the Grand Island YWCA, Ron’s Music and the after-school work of a Wasmer Elementary music teacher.
The effort is an attempt to at least partially replace the Grand Island Public School’s fifth-grade band program, which was eliminated as a result of cuts made to the district’s 2011-12 budget.
The elimination of fifth-grade band was one of the most controversial cuts in a long list of budget reductions that were made because of a drop in state aid for Grand Island and nearly all other public K-12 school districts in Nebraska for the 2011-12 school year.
