Enrollment continues to grow in G.I. schools

GRAND ISLAND —
A growing school enrollment is a sign of a growing community.
If that statement is true, Grand Island is still a growing community despite the national economic slump.
One sign that Grand Island continues to grow is the jump of about 270
students from September 2007 to September 2008, the month when all
school districts must report their official enrollment to the Nebraska
Department of Education.
Jim Werth, assistant superintendent for student services, has
previously told The Independent that bump may the largest year-to-year
enrollment increase that the Grand Island Public Schools has ever
experienced.
Apparently, families and their children are still coming to Grand
Island. Dodge Elementary Principal Stephanie Schulte said her K-5
school has enrolled 10 new students just this month, an unusually large
increase for this time of year.
She said that enrollment increase includes a Cuban family that came
from Miami, Fla., lured by the prospect of working at the JBS Swift
& Co. packing plant in Grand Island.
