GRAND ISLAND —
"Awesome!"
If David Letterman had a "Top 10" list for the 10 most overheard words
at the new Engleman Elementary, "awesome" would have ranked No. 1.
And that is no joke.
No. 2 on Letterman's list would have been the word "cool."
That's the exclamation that escaped several kindergartners' lips when
they took their first step through the glassed-in entrance doors to the
school and then through the inner door that led to the school itself.
One kindergartner even blurted out an entire phrase upon taking his first step into the school.
"This is so cool!" he said.
On hand to greet the students was P.E. teacher Brian Caspar, who acted
as the semi-official doorman for sneak peek day at the new Engleman.
Students came in stair-step waves, chauffeured by bus from the old Engleman to the new Engleman.
First came the youngest kindergartners, followed by first-graders,
second-graders, third-graders, fourth-graders, and finally, the oldest
and generally the tallest kids in the school, the fifth-graders.
