Eighth-graders to get early taste of high school life

At least 16 of next year’s top eighth-graders will be taking two of their classes at Grand Island Senior High when the 2009-10 school year begins.

Sue Burch, Grand Island Public Schools director of the high-ability learner (HAL) program, told the Grand Island school board Thursday night that 21 incoming eighth-graders were invited to join the program.

Burch said 16 students accepted the invitation, four declined and one is still in the process of deciding because the family has been out of town and has not had enough time to think about the idea.

Burch said all the eighth-graders ­— who come from Barr, Walnut and Westridge — will first go to their home middle school. She noted that activities such as show choir and jazz band are often held before the first period of the day.  Full Story
