Grand Island Superintendent Steve Joel files this blog as his second dispatch from China.
“We spent Friday a.m. in an orientation for the program. We were addressed by several dignitaries including the Minister of Education. The messages received were:
– China is very interested in moving their educational system to one that provides equal opportunities for all. While stopping short of admiring our system, they are seeing some societal detachment in kids and families that are not educated to high standards. China has high stakes admissions at all levels and families (limited to only one child) sacrifice a great deal to get their kids into the most prestigious public schools.
— They made several mentions to the importance of strengthening China-U.S. relations and see both our countries as being able to make the world better or all. With Chinese the most widely spoken language in the world (1. 3 billion in China alone) and their top high school students learning English in grade school), they would like to make their language available across other continents. They have several teacher exchange programs they want to make available for 2- to 3-year commitments at little cost to interested districts. Right now, there are close to 150 schools in America that are participating.
