Deb Harder said she has heard the rumors about how pilot schools have already been chosen for the extended year school calendar and that parents just “know” their school will be chosen because their principal is so excited about the idea.

But Harder, Grand Island Public Schools elementary teaching and learning director, said the decision will not be made that way.

She said 13 people are on a committee that will make the decision. The committee includes herself; Vern Fisher, assistant superintendent for teaching and learning; 10 elementary school principals; and one elementary school assistant principal.

Harder said the fact a principal sits on the committee does not signify the administrator is particularly interested in trying the extended calendar at his or her building. In fact, one principal sitting on the committee is not particularly interested in having her school use an extended calendar.  Full Story
