McDaniels, who lives in Aurora, told kids that, once a year, lemmings get this very strange urge to run, run, run. The urge is so strong that lemmings will follow one another and run right off a cliff.
He said it took him a long time to quit following the advice of nearly everyone he knew that it was too risky trying to be an illustrator or an author. Just like a lemming, McDaniels was afraid to go his own way.
Because he had severe asthma as a young boy, he was not like his brothers who rode horses and played football, McDaniels said. He missed a lot of school and whenever he had a severe asthma attack his mother would come to him with "my pet wash cloth" because he would get so weak.
