Nothing is final until the ink dries on the contract, but a short Friday interview with Harrison Cass of Waterloo, Iowa, shows why he was at least brought in for a Thursday evening discussion with the school board about serving as Grand Island’s interim super-

intendent.

Cass was superintendent at Columbus, Neb., from 2000 to 2004 and then served as superintendent at Marshalltown, Iowa, from 2004 to June, 2008, when he retired.

His said his retirement, though, only lasted seven days. The board for the Bettendorf, Iowa, school district fired its superintendent in late June. Like Nebraska, superintendent contracts in Iowa run from July 1 to June 30. As a result, the Bettendorf board immediately decided it needed to hire an interim superintendent for the 2008-09 school year. Following his year as interim superintendent, Cass retired again in June 2009.

That means Cass has experience serving as an interim superintendent, which is what he would be asked to do in Grand Island.

However, Cass said both the Columbus school district and Waterloo school district are the ones most similar to Grand Island. He said most of his experience as a superintendent has been in suburban school districts.  Full Story
