Board hears about good test results, need to focus on graduation rate

Grand Island student test scores are generally rising on both district assessments and norm-referenced tests such as the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, with the so-called achievement gap continuing for English language learner students and Hispanic students.

Vernon Fisher, Grand Island Public Schools assistant superintendent for teaching and learning, gave those results to the Grand Island school board on Thursday just before its regularly scheduled August meeting.

He said the gap between scores for native English speakers and English language learners is narrowing, as is the test score gap between non-Hispanic students and Hispanic students.

Fisher said one area the district wants to focus on is the graduation rate at Grand Island Senior High.  Full Story
