Grand Island Public Schools Superintendent Steve Joel has not yet signed a contract to be the next superintendent of the Lincoln Public Schools.

However, Joel's contract is on the March 23 agenda for the Lincoln school board. The Lincoln board publicly reviewed Joel's contract at its March 9 meeting.

As a result, the Grand Island school board took its first tentative step towards finding Joel's replacing, assuming the Lincoln school board gives final approval to the contract at the March 23 meeting.

After meeting in a closed-door session with Joel, Grand Island reconvened in open session and voted to have a special board meeting at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 24.

Grand Island school board president Jennifer Worthington confirmed the special Wednesday morning meeting will be held on the presumption the Lincoln school board and Joel officially agree to the contract on March 23.

"As I've said before, we (board members) can't officially do anything until a contract is signed," Worthington said following Monday night's school board meeting.  Full Story
