A towering crane that loomed above the Kneale Administration Building gave the public a very visible reminder Tuesday about work being done to build a new central kitchen for the Grand Island school district.

Dan Petsch, director of buildings and grounds for the Grand Island Public Schools, said the crane lifted five sections of a roof-top unit that will both heat and cool the new food preparation kitchen.

He estimated the crane, which is owned and operated by MRL Crane Services of Grand Island, weighs 200 tons. "It's one of the largest (cranes) of its kind between Omaha and Denver," Petsch said.

He described the roof-top heating and cooling unit as a "prefabricated mechanical and electrical penthouse."  Full Story
