Band directors keep track of 'litte things'

People who line the parade route for Saturday's Harvest of Harmony Parade will know to look for the "big things" that earn a band a superior rating.

Things like marching in step, having straight lines across and front to back, maintaining proper spacing between the lines, playing music with a clear, crisp tone and some verve.

But band directors such as Northwest High School's Shawn Pfanstiel, Central Catholic's Priscilla Balasa and Senior High's Louie Eckhardt know that parade and field judges also look at lots of little things.


Like black socks.

Pfanstiel said that band members are supposed to wear black socks with their uniforms, but it he said band members will sometimes forget to bring them.

Pfanstiel said he relies on "band moms," who -- among other duties -- keep a supply of extra black socks on hand for those who forget.

Band moms also usually have a supply of extra bobby pins, used to keep girls' hair tucked up underneath their band caps, he said. Some girls wear skull caps to achieve that purpose.

Pfanstiel said the goal for band is for all its members to look uniform, which is why girls's hair must be tucked under their caps, to match the shorter haircuts typically favored by males.  Full Story
