Official 2010-11 enrollment for the Grand Island Public Schools is up by 121 students compared to the previous school year.

Official enrollment in Nebraska schools is taken on the last Friday of September — in this case, Sept. 24.

Total prekindergarten through 12th-grade enrollment is just less than 9,000 children, with 8,952 students. The 121-student increase comes after a 274-student increase the previous year.

Out of Grand Island’s 18 schools, seven have seen a drop in enrollment, while the remaining 11 schools have experienced an increase. Dodge Elementary had the largest decline among elementary schools at 13 students.

Because the new Westridge Middle School was built for 600 students even though enrollment in the old Westridge (which is now Engleman Elementary) consistently stayed right around 300, the Grand Island Public Schools has instituted a policy that students from Barr and Walnut middle schools can attend Westridge if their parents provide the transportation.

The official enrollment figures do not show how many students from Barr and Walnut might have transferred to Westridge. However, Barr is down 23 students from last year, while Walnut is down by eight students. Meanwhile, Westridge enrollment is up by 29 students over last year.  Full Story
