Westridge Middle School students promote recycling

Westridge Middle School's Recycling Club wants the school's students and staff to recycle every day, so club participants are promoting America Recycles Day on Nov. 15, Science Teacher Kay Davis said.

Approximately 15 Westridge students meet after school from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. every Wednesday to transfer newspapers, paper, and plastic bottles placed in recycling containers throughout the school to large brown dumpsters. Mid-Nebraska Disposal picks up the dumpster contents on Thursdays.

America Recycles Day "is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and complete the loop by buying recycled-content products," Davis said. Westridge's Recycling Club started about three years ago.

Club members are placing posters throughout Westridge to promote America Recycles Day, which the National Recycling Coalition started in 1997.

Westridge has recycling containers for plastic bottles in each grade area and recycling containers in music rooms, the office, library, teacher workroom, and each classroom.
