West Lawn Elementary School students studying Australia

West Lawn Elementary School students are “traveling” to Australia from 3:05 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the school as part of their “World Class Learning” theme this year to learn about different continents.

Students will participate in sessions in at the school to learn about the Sydney Opera House, farming, shields, and animals, stories, and games of Australia.

Students will take a virtual trip to the Sydney Opera Home and watch some live opera performances. A local farmer will give a presentation about raising sheep. Students will paint shields with symbols to tell stories, similar to what Aborigines do. Students will learn about animals that live in Australia and hear the Aboriginal story “How the Kangaroo Got Its Pouch.” They will also participate in the True Blue Kangaroo ridiculous relay, Fox in Sheep’s Clothing tag, and use boomerangs.
