West Lawn Elementary School students raising money for playground equipment at Grace Abbott Park
A group of West Lawn Elementary School students called 12 K.I.D.S. has a number of fund-raisers scheduled this summer to raise money to purchase toddler-sized playground equipment for Grace Abbott Park.
The West Lawn students are fourth- and fifth-graders who attend a reading class as part of the High Ability Learner program at the school, and their teacher is Wanda Stelk, the school's integration specialist.
12 K.I.D.S. is an acronym for 12 Kids in Direct Service. The students' goal is to raise $14,000, and they have raised approximately $1,500 to date, Stelk said.
12 K.I.D.S. is affiliated with the Grand Island Education Foundation, which is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, tax-exempt organization. The students have also created a Web site within West Lawn's Web site at:
http://www.gips.org/Projects_WestLawn/12KIDS/Welcome.html.
The fund-raisers scheduled for this summer include:
*9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 6: Schwan's Truck Sale in the parking lot of Shopko on North Webb Road. A percentage of sales will be donated to 12 K.I.D.S.
*11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 7: Day of Play at Grace Abbott Park. This event is a mini-carnival for young children. Event participation tickets are 10 tickets for $5.
*11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 27: Hot dog stand at the North Wal-Mart on Diers Avenue.
*1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 7: Jail and Bail event in the Shopko parking lot. Students will "arrest" Superintendent Steve Joel at the noon Rotary Club meeting and transport him to the Shopko site. Joel will contact people to donate money to get him out of "jail." A local politician may also participate with Joel, but this hasn't been confirmed, Stelk said.
*1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 11: Hot dog stand at the North Wal-Mart on Diers Avenue.
*Friday, Aug. 7: Walk-a-thon at a local park with the location to be announced.
The students are also selling Hy-Vee coupon books and raffle tickets that may be purchased at any of the above events. The Hy-Vee coupon books are $5 each.
The raffle tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. Items that will be raffled include a family photo portrait, tuition for a YWCA dance class, a six-month membership for the Grand Island YMCA, and a $60 gift certificate for Uncle Ed's Restaurant.
The students are also submitting grant applications to raise funds.
Anyone interested in donating to 12 K.I.D.S. may contact the Grand Island Education Foundation, 123 South Webb Road, Grand Island, NE 68803; phone: 385-5900. Checks for the project should be made payable to the Grand Island Education Foundation.
