West Lawn Elementary School students organize Hearts for Haiti fund drive
West Lawn Elementary School students have started a three-week fund drive to assist victims of the Haiti earthquake, Principal Jane Gloor said.
West Lawn students have a connection to Haiti, she said. Kristin Hamner, daughter of West Lawn kindergarten teacher Devon Hamner and Grand Island Senior High School English teacher Chuck Hamner, is a missionary who works in the Dominican Republic and has visited West Lawn many times. She has spent time on the Dominican Republic/Haiti border assisting victims from the Jan. 12 earthquake. Devon Hamner wrote an article that was shared with students about her daughter's activities.
A West Lawn teacher suggested organizing an "Act of Kindness," and the Hearts for Haiti project was created. In two days, West Lawn students collected $355.
"It has taken off like fire," Gloor said.
Kristin Hamner works for Foundation for Peace and the Presbyterian Church USA as a missionary. Proceeds from the fund drive will be donated to the organizations to assist Haiti earthquake victims, Gloor said.
When a student donates a quarter, the studentís name is written on a heart, which is posted in the school's commons area. Several times a week, all students sing "We Are the World." At the end of each week, the class that has collected the most money gets to eat lunch at a Hearts for Haiti lunch table. At the end of the three weeks, the class that has raised the most money will receive an ice cream cake decorated with hearts.
One West Lawn student had to enter the school and get the custodian to help her carry a bag of coins to the principal's office. The student donated $45.50.
"What a piggy bank donation!" Gloor said.
