Wasmer Elementary School students will write about sledding experiences
Wasmer Elementary School students will return to the school's former site on Dec. 16, go sledding, and then write about their experiences, if the weather permits, Principal Betty Desaire said.
Staff members plan to take students in shifts to the former school site in the 1600 block of West Division Street starting at noon Wednesday, Dec. 16 and concluding at approximately 1:40 p.m. Dec. 16, as long as the temperature is above 25 degrees.
"Each will then have until Christmas break that begins Dec. 23 to write a story about the sledding experiences," Desaire said.
The essays will be judged using the Six Traits of Writing rubric. The six elements in the writing model are ideas, organization, voice, sentence fluency, word choice, and conventions (mechanical correctness). A winner will be selected from each grade level and will receive a new sled.
Students began attending school at the "new" Wasmer at 318 S. Clark St. in the fall of 2000. The old Wasmer Elementary School building at 1613 W. Division St. was demolished in 2004. The City of Grand Island purchased the block, which is bounded by Division, Koenig, Broadwell, and Monroe Street. The city plans to use the site for a drainage cell for water from Second Street. After the old school building was demolished, the area where the basement was located was not filled. Some dirt was removed to use as fill dirt at the city's new Law Enforcement Center site, and then the sunken area at the old school site was reshaped.
