Walnut students raising funds for ill student
Walnut Middle School's seventh-grade basketball teams and a staff team will compete against each other on Feb. 29 in a fund-raiser for a Walnut student with cancer.
Halee Melgoza, a seventh-grader at Walnut, has been fighting cancer for three years, said Brooke Iverson, a Walnut teacher.
Walnut's seventh-grade girls basketball "A" team will play Walnut's seventh-grade boys "A" team at 2:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29, in the school's gym. The winners will then play against a team of Walnut staff members for the final showdown.
Students are being asked to bring a dollar to help raise money for this event.
"This will help the Melgoza famly with expenses that occur from their traveling to Omaha for treatment," Iverson said. "We are a family at Walnut and now is our chance to show Halee we care."
