Walnut students honoring people buried at Veterans Home Cemetery
Walnut Middle School students are honoring all people buried at the Nebraska Veterans Home Cemetery in Grand Island by placing a homemade note of appreciation from a Walnut student and a flag at each grave.
A group of Walnut students called PALS (Partners and Leaders in Service) are placing the decorations at the cemetery beginning at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5. Students also placed decorations at the cemetery on Nov. 4.
"All kids at Walnut have written a note or multiple notes of appreciation to the deceased veterans, and the notes have been placed on flags," said Julie Schlachter, a school social worker at Walnut.
"The PALS have requested to do this out of respect and appreciation of those who have sacrificed so much and have not been forgotten. Lots of the notes written by Walnut kids are very heartfelt and genuine," she said.
There are approximately 1,400 graves at the Veterans Home Cemetery, which is located on the north side of Capital Avenue near Webb Road.
