Walnut student places in Sheldon Museum of Art poetry contest

Aubrey Thompson, an eighth-grade student at Walnut Middle School, placed third in the middle school division of the Sheldon Museum of Art's Nebraska Poets on Sheldon Paintings contest, said Sarah Miller, a Walnut Middle School teacher.

More than 250 entries were received from students in Grades K-12 and adults who wrote poems about Sheldon artworks that inspired them.  Competition divisions were for Grades K-5, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12, and adults.

Thompson's poem was titled "Perspective" and was inspired by Lilian Westcott Hale's "The Convalescent."

A grant from the Nebraska Arts Council made the contest possible.

"Poets on Painters" is a visual and literary exhibition at the Sheldon Museum of Art in Lincoln on view through June 29 that pairs 20 contemporary poets with 20 contemporary paintings.
