Walnut Middle School students collect food items for Head Start

Walnut Middle School students collected more than 1,700 items in a food drive to donate to Head Start in Grand Island, Walnut teacher Dawn Haymart said.

The food drive has occurred for the last 12 years. This year's drive ended on Dec. 11. Walnut's eighth-grade homerooms coordinated the drive, which was a competition among homerooms. Teacher Brooke Iverson's class collected the most items (167) and will receive a pizza party as a reward.

Head Start assembles food baskets for the families they serve, using the donated food.
