Walnut Middle School sponsoring penny war to raise funds for Red Cross relief efforts in Japan

Walnut Middle School is sponsoring a penny war for its students from March 22 to April 5 to raise funds for the American Red Cross disaster relief in Japan, Principal Rod Foley said.

Walnut teacher Loretta Broberg’s seventh-grade homeroom is organizing the penny war, Foley said.

Students will be encouraged to bring pennies to drop into their team’s jar in the school office. The team that collects the most pennies by April 5 will receive homemade cookies for the entire team.

Students are also encouraged to bring nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar bills to place in opposing teams’ jars to “reduce” the overall penny total.
