Walnut Middle School and Boys and Girls Club of Central Nebraska are sponsoring a local qualifying event for the USA Junior Olympic Skills Competition on Saturday, April 25, at the school.
The Junior Olympic Skills Competition is a free national grassroots skills competition that provides boys and girls ages 8 to 13 the opportunity to showcase their athletic abilities in four sports -- basketball, soccer, tennis, and track and field. Each sport is scored individually, and boys and girls compete separately.
The Grand Island event will begin at 10 a.m. April 25 at Walnut Middle School at 1600 N. Custer Ave.
Interested people may contact Cory Ferralez with Boys and Girls Club of Central Nebraska at (308) 391-2421 or e-mail to him at cory@bgccn.org.
Junior Olympic Skills Competition encourages youth participation in sports and emphasizes fair and friendly competition. Youngsters can participate in any or all of the individual sports and advance through three levels of competition, including Local, Regional and the National Finals.
Following are descriptions of the competitions in each sport:
*Tennis: Participants serve and continue to hit a low-compression tennis ball against a wall as many times as possible in 30 seconds. A tennis racket and low-compression tennis balls will be provided. Participants may use their own tennis rackets.
*Basketball: Participants score as many points as possible in 45 seconds by making baskets from designated shooting areas and the free throw line.
*Soccer: Participants are tested on their ability to dribble, shoot, and score with a soccer ball in the fastest time possible.
*Track and Field: Participants compete in the 50-meter dash and the standing broad jump to receive the highest cumulative point score.
All participants must provide a copy of a valid birth certificate or other proof of identification and age at all levels of competition for each sport. All participants must complete a registration form that is signed by the participant's parent or guardian. Participants may register the day of the event.
Participants' ages are determined as of Aug. 31, 2009. The age groups and birthday ranges for each group are:
*Age 8-9: Participants born Sept. 1, 1999, through Aug. 31, 2001
*Age 10-11: Participants born Sept. 1, 1997, through Aug. 31, 1999.
*Age 12-13: Participants born Sept. 1, 1995, through Aug. 31, 1997.
