Seven students to graduate from the Ombudsman Program

Seven students who were once at risk of dropping out will graduate from Grand Island Public Schools' Ombudsman Program on Thursday, Dec. 16.

Grand Island Public Schools and Ombudsman Educational Services partnered during the 2010-2011 school year to help improve the high school graduation rate among at-risk students. Students who have made choices that placed them outside of a traditional pathway to graduation are referred to Ombudsman by Grand Island Public Schools.

Among the graduates is Roberto Fraire, who needed additional credits to graduate.

"Ombudsman was the best choice," Fraire said. "At Ombudsman I can work at my own pace and the teachers provide the one-on-one help I need."

Ombudsman students follow a customized academic plan created to meet their specific educational needs and give them greater accountability for their learning. They complete most coursework in a technology-rich environment, which allows them to receive immediate feedback and helps them become more familiar with tools they will use in college, trade or vocational school or the workplace. Students also participate in teacher-led extended learning activities and small group instruction to help them apply knowledge and enhance their social skills.

Ombudsman is accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement.

Graduation will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16, at the Ombudsman Grand Island center located at 2300 North Webb Road in Grand Island.

Nationally, 85 percent of Ombudsman students graduate, earn credits or return to their district school closer to or at grade level. Ombudsman has served more than 132,000 students since its founding in 1975 and partners with more than 120 school districts in 18 states. For more information, visit www.ombudsman.com
