Two individuals selected for G.I. Senior High School Hall of Honor

Two individuals have recently been selected for induction into the Grand Island Senior High Hall of Honor, said Grand Island Education Foundation Director Traci Skalberg.

The "2008 Class" includes the late Ron Moore, Class of 1950, and Rosemarie Keller Skaine, Class of 1954. Both Moore and Skaine will be formally inducted at a ceremony during the fall of 2009.

Ron Moore was a banker, golfer, and philanthropist. After graduating from Grand Island Senior High School in 1950, Moore went to the University of Denver on a golf scholarship and majored in finance and banking. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot and captain. In 1968, Moore purchased the First National Bank of Center, Colo., and then in 1977 acquired Guaranty Bank and Trust. Moore directed the growth of the Guaranty Bank and Trust assets from $91 million to more than $1.2 billion.

Moore was a talented and passionate golfer. He served on the executive committee for the 1978 U.S. Open at Cherry Hills Country Club, and he chaired the 1985 PGA Championship at Cherry Hills. He developed the Links Golf Course and the Highlands Ranch Golf Club in Colorado. Moore is a member of the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame and won all four of the state's major amateur championships.

Moore is credited with saving the University of Denver's golf program through his philanthropy and support. Additionally, Moore received several awards for his support of charities in the Denver area. He especially liked charities that focused on children and education.

Moore's family includes wife Carol (Miller) Moore, Grand Island Senior High School Class of 1950, their three children, and several grandchildren.  Ron Moore died from an illness on April 7, 2003.

Rosemarie Keller Skaine is an author and sociologist. She is credited with giving sociology a human face and recording the voices of women and men into history. Skaine has a master's degree in sociology from the University of Northern Iowa and has written 11 books. Her first book published in 1996 was titled "Power and Gender:  Issues in Sexual Dominance and Harassment." Skaine received the prestigious Gustavus Myers Center Award for her examination of human rights in North America through this book.

Additional titles by Rosemarie Skaine include "The Women of Afghanistan Under the Taliban," "Women College Basketball Coaches," "Paternity and American Law," "The Cuban Family," "Female Suicide Bombers," "Women at War," "Women Political Leaders in Africa," and a tribute to her father, "A Man of the Twentieth Century: Recollections of Warren V. Keller."

Skaine is a former high school English teacher and college professor. She participated in the Teachers Exchange Program while in China with her husband, Professor James Skaine, at Beijing Normal, Hebei Teachers, and Shaanxi Teachers, and Guangxi Teachers Universities, May 1991. She traveled to Havana, Cuba, with the U.S. Delegation to the XII International Congress on Family Law, September 2002. In January 2004, she traveled to Kenya and Tanzania to study for her next book. Skaine noted that one of the many rewarding visits was to the Maasai tribe.

Skaine and her husband James live in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
