'Stuff the Bus' offered to collect school supplies
Central Nebraskans will have the opportunity to “stuff the bus” Aug. 4 and Aug. 5 to donate school supplies for homeless and less fortunate children in the community.
The children need the school supplies but may not be able to afford buying them, said Verna Haberman, outreach coordinator for Grand Island Public Schools.
Yellow school buses for the “Stuff the Bus” program will be located at both Wal-Marts in Grand Island; Kmart, 3535 W. 13th St.; and Shopko, 2208 N. Webb Road, on Aug. 4 and Aug. 5. Each school’s student supply list will be posted at participating stores.
Hundreds of backpacks containing school supplies are distributed annually to students. During the 2010-11 school year, 400 backpacks were given to students. Participating agencies are the Salvation Army, Hope Harbor, Crisis Center, Head Start, Grand Island Public Schools’ Outreach Center, area churches, and Central Nebraska Community Services.
Qualifying families must have a referral form from one of the participating agencies. Supplies will be distributed to recipients from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 10 and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Grand Island Public Schools Outreach Center office in the Nebraska Workforce Development building at 1306 W. Third St. A recipient must bring a completed referral form and at least one form of identification to the Aug. 10 distribution.
