State Treasurer Shane Osborn will address Barr Middle School students
Nebraska Treasurer Shane Osborn will be the featured speaker at Barr Middle School's annual Veterans Day Program at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the school's gym, teacher Jason Weaver said.
As part of the program, eighth-grade students were asked to think about the veterans in their lives and invite them to attend, if possible. These honorees will be recognized during the ceremony.
Osborn gained international recognition on April 1, 2001, when his airplane experienced a mid-air collision with a Chinese fighter jet over international airspace. The impact severely damaged Osborn's aircraft, causing it to lose over 8,000 feet in an inverted dive. Osborn regained control of the crippled plane and was able to safely land it on the Chinese island of Hainan.
For 12 days, the communist Chinese government held Osborn and his 23 crew members hostage. For his heroism, Osborn was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross along with the Meritorious Service Medal. After terrorists struck in the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, Osborn extended his tour of duty and flew combat missions in Afghanistan. He received additional decorations for his bravery there. In 2006, Osborn became one of the youngest state treasurers in Nebraska history.
Barr's program has received statewide recognition and has been chosen by Secretary of State John Gale as a model Veterans Day program for middle schools throughout the state, Weaver said.
