Starr Elementary School rolling out red carpet for students' first day of school

Aug. 19 is the first day of school for many Grand Island Public Schools students.

Starr Elementary School students will experience a different twist for their first day of school, Principal John Hauser said.

As students are dropped off from vehicles in the morning by their parents at the school at 315 Wyandotte St., Hauser will greet them. Students will walk on red carpet to the school's entrance, and Starr staff members will photograph them as they enter school.

All staff and students will gather in the gym at the start of the school day. As Starr certified staff members are introduced to students, staff members will enter the gym while Husker "Tunnel Walk" music is playing.

All Starr staff members will wear GIPS logo purple polo shirts on Aug. 19 to show unity, Hauser said.

At the end of the day, students and staff will gather again in the gym to view a slide show of photos taken during the day. Popcorn will be available.

When students go home and are asked how their first day of school was, Starr staff members want the students to say more than "fine" and describe what they experienced, Hauser said.
